THE FUTUR OF HEALTHCARE
The Future of Healthcare: Why African Health Tech Holds the Key to Global Innovation
A Call to Action Across Africa, health tech innovations are saving lives and reshaping systems. Yet, achieving sustainable health impact requires systemic changes in global health procurement and greater support for local innovators.
Local Solutions Making Global Impact
In Rwanda, Zipline’s drone service delivers life-saving medicines to remote areas, with over 15 million vaccine doses already transported. Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Shelf Life by Field Intelligence empowers community pharmacies with inventory management and financing, ensuring access to genuine medicines for underserved patients. These innovations demonstrate the potential of African-led health tech to solve persistent challenges.
Why Support Local Innovators?
Despite proven resilience and contextual relevance, local solutions often face barriers due to lack of engagement from global stakeholders. Governments, donors, and large purchasers must collaborate with African innovators to unlock sustainable growth.
Fostering Inclusive Ecosystems
Public-private partnerships (PPPs) like i3 Africa exemplify the potential of collaboration. This program has provided grants to 60 startups, resulting in 70+ partnerships, 700+ jobs, and improved health outcomes for 190 million patients annually. Scaling such models could transform health systems continent-wide.
Five Steps for Sustainable Impact
Invest in Tech-Driven Delivery: Support innovations like AI diagnostics, EMR platforms, and telemedicine.
Set Procurement Targets: Allocate budgets specifically for African innovations. Promote PPPs: Expand programs like i3 Africa to bridge gaps between innovators and resources.
Generate Evidence: Invest in data to refine and scale impactful solutions.
Empower Women-Led Startups: Target funding and support to women-led health tech initiatives.
By investing in African-led innovations, we can create a sustainable health ecosystem that addresses today’s challenges and prepares for tomorrow’s. Now is the time to act—let’s ensure African health tech thrives on a global stage.
