Global banks are now using AI, especially generative models and machine learning, to foster innovation, drive efficiency, and strengthen security. Saudi Arabia is positioning itself as a critical hub in this transformation, with companies like MOZN pioneering technological advances.

Mohammed Alhussein, founder and CEO of MOZN, highlighted in a recent interview the profound improvements AI has brought to financial services over the past decade.

“Those products are better, faster, and are being offered online. However, the rise in online banking services has also opened the door for fraudsters.”

To address this, banks are implementing AI-driven solutions for predictive analytics, compliance automation, and real-time fraud detection. Singapore Fintech Festival 2024: The Fusion of AI and Quantum Technology

Returning for its ninth edition, the Singapore Fintech Festival (SFF) 2024 is set to focus on the transformative potential of AI and quantum technology within the financial sector.

Organized by the Monetary Authority of Singapore in partnership with industry leaders, SFF 2024 will draw policymakers, innovators, and thought leaders to explore how these technologies are reshaping global finance.

Ahead of the main conference, which will run from November 6-8, the event includes several notable pre-conference segments:

• Insights Forum (November 4-5): Exclusive sessions fostering public-private dialogue on essential financial infrastructure topics, including climate solutions and carbon market challenges.

• Innovation Lab Crawl: A showcase of cutting-edge fintech projects across Singapore’s top organizations, such as the Visa Innovation Centre and NUS Fintech Lab.

  The main conference will cover six major themes, including responsible AI use, scaling digital assets, bridging payment gaps, sustainable finance, financial inclusion, and future talent needs shaped by AI. Expected to attract over 66,000 participants from 150 countries, the event underscores Singapore’s role as a global fintech leader and a center for pioneering technologies like quantum computing.

  Prominent speakers, including Chia Der Jiun (Managing Director of MAS) and Piyush Gupta (CEO of DBS Bank), will discuss how innovation and policy can collaboratively address today’s pressing financial challenges. The Singapore Fintech Festival promises a robust agenda of dialogue, networking, and future-focused insights that will help chart the course of the industry.

Women in AI – Sophia Velastegui on AI’s Rapid Growth and Challenges

In this edition's Tech Spotlight, we feature Sophia Velastegui, a pioneering force in artificial intelligence and a prominent voice in the ongoing discourse on the pace of AI development. As a member of the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) national AI advisory committee and former Chief AI Officer at Microsoft’s business software division, Velastegui’s journey and perspectives highlight both the promise and challenges AI brings to our world.

A Path to AI: Serendipity and Passion

Velastegui didn’t initially set out for a career in artificial intelligence. With a background in mechanical engineering from Georgia Tech, she found her first foothold in the tech world through a role at Apple in 2009. This experience opened her eyes to the transformative potential of AI, particularly in the ways it could create personalized and intuitive user experiences.

The impact of AI-driven products on user satisfaction and interaction compelled her to focus her career on this evolving field, sparking a journey that would later see her working with some of the most innovative AI technologies across Silicon Valley.

Contributions to Iconic Products Velastegui’s resume includes work on transformative products that have shaped the tech landscape:

• Apple’s Hardware and Software Innovations: She was a key figure in the development of products like the MacBook Air, iPad, and the CarPlay platform. Later, as a leader in Apple’s special projects group, she contributed to projects such as iCloud, Apple Maps, and Apple’s data pipeline systems.

• Silicon Valley Leadership at Google: In 2015, Velastegui joined Google as head of silicon architecture and director for the Nest product line, where she expanded her expertise in hardware and AI integration.

  Driving AI in Business Apps at Microsoft

  After a stint at audio technology company Doppler Labs, Velastegui’s role at Microsoft brought her to the forefront of AI innovation in business applications. As General Manager of AI products, she oversaw the infusion of AI capabilities into tools that are now ubiquitous in professional settings, including:
  

• LinkedIn, Bing, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Azure: Under her leadership, these applications adopted AI functionalities that greatly enhanced user experiences.

• GPT-3 and OpenAI Integration: Velastegui also led internal projects involving OpenAI’s GPT-3 model, harnessing the potential of generative AI for Microsoft’s ecosystem.
  
  Her tenure at Microsoft solidified her expertise in large-scale AI deployment, where she observed both the tremendous value AI could bring to businesses and the complexities of integrating it responsibly.
